Team Building: An Interview with Beth Goldenburg, CSEP
It's a specialty of Beth Goldenburg's company, DJC Entertainment. To give you ideas, I asked her to talk about what team building is, what it can do and how her company handles it.
BHG: Team building can take a couple different forms. If a client just wants a fun interaction event with the employees so that they can get to really know each other, that's called team bonding. And that's a pretty much a leisure type of event, such as a holiday party, recognition party that can take the look of a dance party or a casino night. Or we can do the game show or fun trivia.
"When you have the goal of fostering interaction between managers and employees you are doing team building."
Risk taking, communication, there's so many goals you can facilitate with team building... and in addition to being fun referees, we can facilitate the event and break down the activities into real life experiences. For eg., if we are doing the game show and we see there is not great communication between team members we'll correlate that to real life experiences, a work project, and try to help fix the problems in the real life work situation just using a non-intimidating method of the game show. Other things that we've done is creating activity stations, everything from team commercials where each team will have to create a commercial that represents them in the real work place. Risk taking, we've done rock wall climbing to allow the employee to experience personal growth, we have done just a variety of activities. EMZ: With team building, who generally contacts you? Are you contacted by people in the HR department... BHG: By a variety of people. Sometimes its a meeting planner, sometimes it is HR, sometimes it is a call that comes into a testing company that does personality profiles and they want more activities in their program so they call us. And we will do the proposal jointly. EMZ: What kinds of companies have used your services in that area? BHG: You name it, Everything from manufacturers to staffing companies... Usually companies that have 25 or more employees. And my new venture is to explore venues that have novel features for team building retreats. Everything from academic institutions where we can actually hold the team building program in an academic institution. to water parks where we can do full team building events. That is something that we are pursuing now. EMZ: That sounds really interesting. BHG: Yes, it's really cool. EMZ: How is it received generally by the employees and the managements? BHG: Very positive. Especially now in the times of economic hardship and layoffs, morale building and team efficiency is of utmost importance because people are expected to do a lot more with a lot less. Team building is becoming ever so more so popular. People are looking for more and more creative ideas. Beth
